MDS is an Electronic Medical Records and Medical Practice Information Management software application designed for use in hospitals and in general practice. It stores the clinical and demographic details of patients treated and designed to be used by clinical staff as they are actually seeing or have just attended the patient. The system allows hospital staff to keep paperless medical records, retrieve previous clinical records electronically, prints visit slips or discharge letters for patients to take home, produce health statistics and send electronic notifications of notifiable diseases to the relevant Medical Officers of Health.

MDS has been designed for; Improving patient care by providing all medical information related to patients to medical officers and nursing staff for efficient decision making and accurate attendance including the dispensing of medicines and laboratory testing helping decision makers to detect and control emerging and endemic health problems, monitor progress towards health goals, and promote equity Improving efficient use of resources by way of effective stock controls empowering individuals and communities with timely and understandable health-related information, and drive improvements in quality of services strengthening the evidence base for effective health policies, permitting evaluation of scale-up efforts, and enabling innovation through research Improving clinical quality and safety by way of making available clinical information without delay (e.g. drug allergies, previous medications, results of previous investigations) Promote research among health care professionals.
